Eyes flicker like planets around the sun. And the sun itself is my mind. It burns my eyes and my soul to ashes. My head is a chest full of nightmares that I can’t escape from. It’s locked from the outside.
Lemsa is a small seaside town, surrounded by pine trees, the sea, and ridiculous palm trees. Despite its size, I’ve managed to find plenty of places where I can hide from my life. Though lately, Yan has been dragging me to basketball practice more and more often.
My team, by the way, seems to think I’m a weirdo. I don’t disagree. But, honestly, they’re a bunch of freaks themselves. In any case, I can’t share what scratches at my chest and eats away at my brain with a tiny spoon every night with any of them.
Or with anyone at all — except my Lora, of course.
She’s the most amazing thing that’s ever happened to me. And please, don’t get the wrong idea. She’s my soulmate, my yellow, my Siamese sister, my moon. She understands me. No. She can smell my thoughts. And I can feel the beat of her heart.
Only my heart, it seems, has stopped beating. Can she feel that, too? It seems like all that’s left of me is skin. I’m transparent.
If I catch fire, will there be anything left of me?
